Eric Carle collages

Children have been reading and learning from Eric Carle's stories forever. They're full of life lessons about diversity, kindness, and being healthy. They're also contain wonderful artwork. We looked at his illustrations and used them for inspiration to make collage animals. Collage is layering paper to create pictures.

First the students drew a rough draft of their animal and its habitat. Next they created a shopping list of colors they would need. Only given the three primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and black and white, they mixed their colors, layered them, textured them with various scraping tools, turning plain white paper in to collage-able paper. Carefully referencing their draft, they started from the back of their picture and worked their way forward.
