Self portraits can be nerve wrecking. The most dreaded worry is "will it look like me?" However not all self portraits have to look like photographs. When presented in a less intimidating manner, self portraits can be rewarding. They enhance their skills in observation and composition.
The first graders looked at some self portraits that were a bit cooky. They acted like detectives and made inferences about the artist based on their self portraits. Just like the self portraits they looked at, the students used color and symbols to personalize their portraits.
After drawing their portraits in pencil on black paper, they went over them with white glue.
Then once the glue dried they used chalk to add color. The hardened glue acts as a resist and the black paper shows through.
