paper baskets

The Kindergarteners finished their caterpillars the previous week. Just like in Eric Carle's The Very Hungary Caterpillar, their caterpillars will be munching of food in preparation for their metamorphosis. This class they created paper baskets which will be filled with different foods in the coming weeks.

Using Penelope (our SmartBoard) the students practiced using different lines to create a design that represented the weaving of a basket. We reviewed zig-zag, straight, curly, loopy, and spiral lines. We also discussed techniques for making thick versus thin lines. They learned the directional words horizontal, vertical, and diagonal. By overlapping lines of various orientations they could create interesting patterns and designs. A student (above) draws spirals inside a grid made up of horizontal and vertical lines.

Each student started with a rectangular piece of paper. To make a basket shape they snipped off the bottom corners. Some students made baskets with rounded corners.

Others made baskets with straight edges.

With an endless combination of lines, colors, and shapes, each basket came out pleasantly different.
