optical sketchbook covers

The fifth graders are making sketchbooks. Currently they are working on the cover which is an optical illusion drawing of their name.
First they drew their names using block letters and then covered it with a carefully planned gridded line design to create an optical illusion. Once their drawing is done, they create their color scheme by picking a combination of complementary and analogous colors. Complementary colors, such as red and green, are across from each other on the color wheel. Analogous colors, like yellow and orange, are next to each other on the color wheel.
This project requires students to be accurate, patient, and observant. They practice measuring with a ruler, further develop their understanding of spatial sense, and recognize patterns and relationships. Next week they will use a pamphlet book binding method to assemble their sketchbooks.
