lines and hungry caterpillar

Kindergarten classes reviewed various types of lines by looking at Navajo serape style wearing blankets. They noticed not only the different colors and patterns of the blankets, but the various thicknesses of the lines.

The kindergarteners and I are not the only news ones to the art room this year. We now have a SmartBoard, which the classes have agreed to name Penelope. She's a very smart. It's been a great tool to have, especially for a subject that is so dependent on visuals. Using the SmartBoard allows me the opportunity to mark the images without damaging them as well as letting the students share their thoughts and opinions visually.

the Very Hungry Caterpillar
After reviewing lines, we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. This book is wonderful for young children in so many ways! But today we focused on using the book as inspiration for making our own caterpillar stories. First the kindergarteners will make their caterpillar. They practiced tracing circles in pairs and filled each with a colorful line design.
Next week they will make more colorful circles, cut them out, assemble their caterpillar, and finally decorate it with legs and antennae. In the third week of the project, the students will learn about shapes and make paper food to feed their caterpillar. Just like the story, the students will make a butterfly which incorporates both lines and shapes as the final portion of the lesson.
