The second graders have been studying marine life in science class. For the past couple of weeks they have been working on watercolor paintings of marine life specific to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Each year the Massachusetts Marine Educators sponsors an art contest asking for pictures featuring marine life. First they drew their animal on specially toothed watercolor paper and traced their lines in sharpie. Next they used water color oil pastels that dissolve when painted over with water. Using these water color pastels let the students control the color better than a brush for the finer details. Then they brushed over the pastels with water to blend the colors together.
